Bowers & Wilkins - DM 603 S3

Bowers & Wilkins is a well-known British company that produces loudspeaker sets that have been appreciated by enthusiasts of the audio industry for years. The founder of the company was John Bowers, who together with Roy Wilkins started their business in 1946 by opening a shop with audio components. John at that time was dissatisfied with the sound quality of the loudspeakers, which did not reproduce the sounds of his favorite music poorly. At the back of the store, designs of modified loudspeakers were created, which gained recognition among the growing, demanding crowd of satisfied customers. This initiated the impulse of new activity focused on research and development of own projects. The company was founded in 1966 in the seaside town of Worthing in south-east England on the English Channel coast in West Sussex. Income from operations was invested in the development of new products. An important research and development center for the company, the "Steyning Research Establishment", was established in Steyning, 16 km from the Worthing store. The "SRE" center was built and adapted specifically for audio purposes, it had advanced measuring equipment with adapted listening rooms.

During this time, Bowers developed many new projects that positioned the company ever higher. In 1974, a composite material of Kevlar fibers impregnated with resin was patented, which was well suited for applications in the production of a lightweight, rigid and internally damped loudspeaker diaphragm. Since then, the yellow Kevlar speaker cones have been a distinctive calling card in Bowers speakers. New research into eliminating resonances for the sensitive tweeter brought many improvements to the Nautilus design, which physically separated the proudly advertised diamond dome tweeter. The work on the Nautilus project also improved the bass-reflex port tunnel, which, through golf ball-like recesses, reduced the turbulence of the airflow "Flowport".

The DM 603 S3 are 2.5-way floorstanding loudspeakers with a 165mm aluminum bass driver and a 165mm Kevlar mid/bass driver. The high tones are handled by a 1" metal dome transducer made in Nautilus technology. The enclosure is ventilated with a front bass-reflex tunnel in the "Flowport" technology. The frequency response is set in the range from 44 Hz to 22 kHz, where the cut-off frequencies at -6 dB are 34 Hz and 42 kHz. The loudspeakers have an efficiency of 90 dB at 8 ohm impedance, which is quite easy to drive for most amplifiers, where the harmonic distortion is close to 1% for 55 Hz - 20 kHz. The power of the recommended amplifier for the DM 603 S3 is estimated at 25-150W at 8 ohm load.

Sound

The Bowers play dynamically with a large dose of fast, colorfully resounding bass, which gives the music a good filling. The kick drum is strong and fast, and the snare definitely leads the rhythm. The aluminum woofer fills the lowest frequency range, which is supported by a second Kevlar bass/midrange driver of the same size. Both speakers are perfectly tuned to each other and perfectly complement each other in the low frequency range. The midrange is well controlled by a Kevlar driver that doesn't lose control of what it's made for. The vocals have the right body and scale, they are clean and retain the velvety color that gives the music seriousness and a sense of realism. The image of the width of the stage and the positioning of the stereo channels is quite well drawn, while preserving the flavors of details contained in the musical material. The highs are brightened and go quite far. Metal domes equipped with Nautilus technology are great at presenting cymbals. The accents of the percussion cymbals and all brass instruments resonate well and definitely. The Bowers, however, lack sweetness in the highest frequencies, there are situations where the treble can be gritty and exaggerated. Most often this situation occurs with a digital source of a bright-sounding CD player or a poorly matched interconnect with a silver-based conductor. The analog signal provided by the turntable greatly enhances the presentation of the tending to bright highs, which are softened without losing detail. The analog signal introduces a drop of candy sweetness and specific sophistication of the treble at the same time. The sound gets a noble timbre, which becomes calmer, gaining a honeyed atmosphere at the same time. Nautilus metal domes require careful selection of speaker wiring, where it is worth experimenting with double bi-wire wiring and replacing metal jumpers with short sections of good speaker wires, which can significantly affect the final sound of the Bowers.

DM 603 S3 were also tested for movies, where they presented a high level of sound in the action cinema on the stereo set described below. Demonstrations SPIDERMAN - Far From Home, TRANSFORMERS - The Last Knight, VENOM, and AVATAR fantastically presented the actors' clear voices, with rich detail supported by dynamic fast bass, which well emphasized explosive scenes like a set equipped with a subwoofer.
