KEF-Reference 201

British manufacturer KEF (Kent Engineering and Foundry) is one of the pioneers of loudspeaker technology. A recognizable trademark are the Uni-Q transducers, which have undergone significant modifications since their appearance in the first loudspeakers in 1988 and are currently the most technologically complex transducers used in any KEF loudspeaker sets.

The advanced and patented Uni-Q technology is characterized by the placement of the tweeter in the acoustic center of the bass-midrange cone unit. The speaker designed in this way disperses the sound source in a single point throughout the room, dispersing the sound waves evenly. This eliminates a single sweet spot and ensures that everyone hears the same clear, natural and detailed sound no matter where they sit. The benefits of Uni-Q also include timing balance for the mids and highs for a wider off-axis response that improves the smoothness of creating a realistic sense of more space with more accurate placement of more clearly localized sounds.

The Reference series are advanced premium class loudspeakers. The manufacturer uses expensive materials and the latest technologies to deliver the sound in the most faithful form.

The KEF Reference 201 are four-way bookshelf speakers with a front vented bass-reflex port. In a housing quite large for bookshelf speakers, there are as many as 4 technologically advanced loudspeakers. The lowest frequency band is allocated to a 165mm woofer made of fibre-reinforced paper. The bass driver uses Distortion Motor System technology that controls the reduction of voice coil force at high excursion, providing ultra-low distortion for deeper and more powerful bass in a smaller cabinet.

The fifth-generation Uni-Q mid-tweeter unit is designed for high-amplitude operation and consists of a titanium tweeter placed inside the mid-range unit. The super-tweeter loudspeaker, honorably named by the manufacturer as a hyper-tweeter, is responsible for working in the range above 15 kHz. The 19mm titanium dome hyper-tweeter is housed in a separate aluminum housing located at the top outside the box, similar to the Bowers & Wilkins 8xx Nautilus series diamond dome tweeters.

The crossover consists of high-quality components and is very extensive, occupying the entire lower part of the housing rounded to the back. High-quality gold-plated WBT speaker terminals allow you to connect up to three speaker wires in a Tri-Wire configuration, giving you the ability to separate the Uni-Q units from the hyper-tweeter and the bass speaker. The advanced design of the crossover allows you to set the length of the bass response in 3 steps (CUT, FLAT, LIFT) by changing the screw-in fuse located on the back of the housing above the terminals.

Sound

The reference KEF sound commits to something. The reviewed model 201 Reference was compared directly to the smaller, but more modern bookshelf speakers KEF LS-50, which has a more modern and more advanced Uni-Q unit.

The first sounds extracted from the well-matched system in which the 201 came to work were surprisingly dynamic and legible. Much attention was paid to the purity of the background around the instruments, and the surprisingly strong and clean bass from a small enclosure, which could put many floorstanders to shame. Let's start from the top, because we get something that is rarely used in this price range, and even less common in stand mount speakers. The purity, speed and clarity with the multi-color complement of nuances introduced by the hyper-tweeter adds more light to the music and is the proverbial icing on the cake. Yes, it can be heard immediately when brass instruments appear, which sound very realistic. We get more illumination in the highest frequencies, which we will not hear even from much more expensive speakers. The treble is sweet, sonorous and reveals many colorful outlines and colors that will be difficult to find in other speakers of this type. For an untrained ear in a poorly matched system, the 201's may turn out to be too flashy and bright due to the presentation of ultra high frequencies, but in a well-matched system they will reveal cards that will be difficult to beat. A well-designed crossover perfectly complements the range of two tweeters used in one slim housing. The proprietary Uni-Q driver handles the mid to high frequencies well, and what adds or rather complements the titanium hyper-tweeter takes every note of the high frequencies to the next level. The rigid diaphragm of the midrange driver is great at delivering clear vocals, colorful instruments as well as background and breath. The sound signature is arranged rather symmetrically and does not favor any of the bands, thanks to which we get a clear, well-balanced sound. Well-controlled and dynamic bass support does not obscure other sounds with its volume and power. The vocals sound very mature and give a large dose of proximity to the artist in the room. Guitars, whether electric or acoustic, sound clear, decisive and colorful, creating a realistic picture among the rest of the music. In small listening rooms, the lowest frequencies will provide a large dose of emotional, fast, firm and dynamic bass, which will not leave you unsatisfied with low frequencies, demanding to supplement the set with an additional subwoofer.

The loudspeakers are devoid of an aggressive message in which there is no shortage of dynamics and detail. The bass plays culturally and precisely, it can fill the room with a strong and agile hit. The middle part of the information can be accused of a certain degree of clinicalness in conveying a lot of insightful and raw information with a studio pedigree. Great micro-dynamics in which many details are transmitted at low and high volume levels makes us listen to music without nervousness and boredom. Each disc is interesting and can deliver a relaxed warm, clean, yet sterile and rich sound.

KEF-Reference

Contrasting directly the older Uni-Q unit from the reference series with the newer and improved converter that the LS-50 model has, you can quickly notice the great progress of the British in the developed Uni-Q Driver Array technology. While the Reference 201's stereo soundstage is spacious and better positioned than the newer LS-50, the newer Uni-Q unit in the LS-50 is capable of delivering plenty of information with good timing and fast but depleted bass from a two-speaker driver in a small footprint. and that's quite a feat.

Conclusion

Reference 201 are great monitors that can be placed on a desk, bookshelf or recommended stands. The front bass-reflex port makes it easy to position the speakers in smaller and medium-sized rooms without paying too much attention to the distance from the rear wall. The loudspeakers deliver a wide balanced sound spectrum with well-differentiated rich colors dynamically accentuated by a wide and powerful range of lower bass frequencies and the brilliance of a phenomenal hyper-tweeter.
