KEF - PSW 1000.2 Subwoofer

KEF is a very famous brand among loudspeakers, where the legendary LS3 / 5A monitors, despite the passage of years and developing technology, still enjoy a great reputation and great recognition of professionals. Modern technologies used in modern speaker sets allow KEF to go one step ahead of the competition, which translates into excellent sales. A wide line of products targeted at various recipients is gaining more and more satisfied customers. The UniQ drive units, developed for years, are very successfully conquering the HI-END sets market. Active subwoofers have been in KEF's offer for over a dozen years, but earlier they won more home theater audiences than stereo sets. The new models of KEF subwoofers present a completely different league of sound and quality class.

KEF PSW 1000.2

The PSW series is targeted at home theater and music multimedia applications, as confirmed by the Music / Cinema mode switch on the rear control panel. The slotted bass-reflex port, as well as the loudspeaker, is directed downwards. This housing design increases the sound pressure to 106 dB by working with the ground . This requires the use of legs or screw spikes, which are included in the set. The quality of the housing materials is at an average level, the interior looks much better, where we can find a large toroidal transformer XUZHOU Gloria Electronics model: TD-230-0100A with voltages I / P: 0-115V, O / P: 24.5V / 2.9A- 024.5V / 2.9A. Two NOVER LS series capacitors with a capacity of 8200μF placed on a good quality PCB with Toshiba 2SA 1943 transistors. The entire amplifier with electronics is separated from the inside of the housing with a plastic bowl, whose task is to better seal the housing. The slot port and the downward-facing speaker amplify the bass that is more noticeable and more evenly distributed in the room. There is probably no timing as good as a closed housing, but it also does not slow down as much as a typical structure with a resonance tunnel. The 20cm bass driver is driven by a 100W Class D amplifier . The control panel placed on a fairly large aluminum plate allows you to control the gain, 0-180 phase settings, 40-140 Hz frequency cut-off control and music / cinema selection switches. In addition, we get switches for filter settings 12/24 dB per octave, along with the possibility of switching the power supply to stant-by auto / manual mode.

Sound

In small to medium-sized rooms, the PSW 1000.2 does quite well. He's fast and agile enough to emphasize the explosions in the movies and the rhythm in the music. It lacks a bit more power and lower descent, the bass produced by the 8 inch speaker is decently controlled and quite well tuned to the cabinet. It does not purr as pleasantly as the REL and does not deliver as much energy as the Klipsch or SVS, and by placing it next to a much smaller Velodyne, we will feel quite a significant lack of power in relation to the housing dimensions. Nevertheless, it can be a good complement to a mid-range home theater in small spaces.
