RME - ADI 2 DAC FS

32 bit A / D decoder with DSD support up to 768kHz

The German company RME, renowned for its high-quality professional audio equipment, has ventured into the broader consumer market with the ADI 2 DAC FS. This product is aimed at audio enthusiasts and is even labeled as a HI-END product by the manufacturer, a designation clearly stated in the user manual.

Audio professionals who work with studio equipment will immediately notice the resemblance of the ADI 2 DAC FS to its older sibling, the ADI 2 Pro FS R, or even the earlier ADI 2 FS. Recognizing that the DAC will occupy a prominent position among home media devices, likely situated near other audio equipment rather than in a studio rack or directly on the user's desk, the German engineers have equipped the ADI 2 DAC FS with a compact remote control.

Functions

It must be said that the device is quite complex in terms of settings. The features are described using technical jargon that is more comprehensible to professionals in the field of audio than to amateurs. This means that adjusting settings for those unfamiliar with the device often results in either consulting the user manual or making adjustments by ear (i.e., changing settings and listening to determine if there is an improvement or not). Returning to the core functions, the DAC is equipped with an advanced clock known as Steady-Clock FS, which ensures excellent performance in all conversion modes with low jitter. The improved SteadyClock FS reduces self-noise to minimal levels by enhancing the second analog PLL circuit, resulting in decreased phase noise. The device not only provides a professional digital audio interface but also includes the free software tool DigiCheck, which is primarily used for measuring, testing, and analyzing digital audio streams. The ADI 2 DAC FS features two headphone outputs: one large jack for standard headphones (PHONES) and one smaller jack for in-ear monitors (IEM). Both headphone outputs have independent settings in the DAC's menu, which can be saved in the device's memory. The same applies to all rear-panel outputs. This is a highly useful feature because, with two pairs of headphones (one with higher impedance and one with lower impedance), you can independently adjust both outputs to avoid damaging headphones that are connected to a higher amplifier gain. Additionally, you can assign all DSP settings to individual outputs so that each is appropriately adjusted for its connected device.

The display is color, and while not large, it is quite readable and customizable in terms of color settings. RME, with updates to the main DSP chip based on the highly regarded Xilinx SPARTAN 6 audio processor, continually enhances and adds features to the main menu. Therefore, I will not specify the available colors as they may change with future device firmware updates.

When comparing the ADI 2 DAC FS directly with top-tier devices in this category, such as the highly acclaimed CHORD-QUTEST, also based on a Xilinx DSP, we can observe differences such as the expanded on-screen menu navigated using three multifunctional rotary encoders, as well as the included remote control. The volume knob on the RME allows it to function as a preamplifier with an integrated DAC, and the aforementioned remote control provides remote operation capabilities for this preamplifier.

The ADI 2 DAC FS is a device with a studio pedigree, and this becomes apparent as soon as you power it on with the factory settings. Out of the box, it delivers a sterile sound devoid of embellishments across the entire frequency spectrum. There are numerous hidden options for tailoring the sound, which can only be uncovered after a more extended period of familiarization. The DSP offers six filter settings:

  • SD Sharp

  • SD Slow

  • Sharp

  • Words

  • NOSE

  • SD LD

The ADI 2 DAC FS also includes balance, bass, treble adjustments, and a loudness enhancement feature. Additionally, the DSP in the RME ADI 2 DAC FS provides five Crossfeed settings, which allow for blending the directionality of the stereo channels.

Crossfeed Settings:

  • 1.650 Hz (-13dB just a touch)

  • 2.650 Hz (-9.5 dB Jan Meier emulation)

  • 3.700 Hz (-6 dB Chu Moy emulation)

  • 4.700 Hz (-4.5 dB 30 ° 3 meter emulation)

  • 5.700 Hz (-3 dB example how even stronger would sound)

Among the less well-known features is M/S Processing, a special microphone positioning technique where the mid signal is on one channel and the side signal is on the other (left + right, and left – right). The ADI 2 DAC FS also offers the ability to lock volume settings and partially lock menu functions, ensuring that children or others do not accidentally alter your chosen settings by adjusting the controls. The DAC operates as a native "plug and play" device for optical ADAT SPDIF and coaxial SPDIF inputs. Signals delivered via the USB interface require driver installation, which is compatible with Apple computers running macOS, as well as standard PCs or laptops using Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Sound

After fine-tuning the extensive DSP settings, the RME ADI 2 DAC FS truly shines, emerging as a formidable contender among the top performers. The sound can be tailored to personal preferences, resulting in a wide range of satisfied listeners. For me, it hits the mark perfectly, as its capabilities ensure it remains relevant even in systems where the balance is off or certain elements are lacking. Properly calibrated to your existing setup, it delivers clean, nuanced, and detailed sound, with well-preserved instrument localization and texture.

The ADI 2 DAC FS offers a broad dynamic range, rich and punchy bass, natural vocal reproduction, and well-placed choral elements. The accents are strong and effectively convey the emotions captured in the music. In well-executed recordings, the presentation is highly engaging, reminiscent of a live performance. The capabilities of this unassuming DAC are impressive, and it personally ranks first among its competitors for me.
