YAMAHA - RX-A 2070
MusicCast AVENTAGE
The Yamaha RX-A2070 is undoubtedly a modern device that provides a large dose of power combined with many surround sound functions in the 9.2 configuration. The Yamaha home cinema receiver has powerful power amplifiers that can amplify even a very large room with a fairly well-controlled and dynamic sound.
What the A2070 offers should satisfy even the most demanding users. The ability to work as a preamplifier, a fairly good digital-to-analog converter (DAC) based on the Saber 9006AS chip from ESS, and support for Dolby Atmos and DTS-X allow for a spectacular multi-channel sound. The receiver's versatility is enhanced by the MusicCast system with streaming support along with Bluetooth and DAB + digital tuner.
Cinema-fans to whom the described Yamaha is mainly directed will not be disappointed. We get 8 HDMI inputs + 2 HDMI outputs with Ultra 4K support with HDR-10 and Dolby Vision compatible with eARC. The sound settings are handled by the Cinema DSP HD3 processor, which is optimized for Dolby Atmos and DTS-X. An addition to the surround sound settings is the Yamaha YPAO RSC 3D system, which uses a microphone to optimize the characteristics of the room with 64-bit correction and angle measurement.
The A2070 amplifier delivers 220 W per channel into 4 Ohm and 140W into 8 Ohm load, which gives very high power in combination with a multi-channel set of loudspeakers. Unfortunately, the louder the higher the distortion reaching even 10% THD. For owners of good loudspeakers and music playback in stereo mode, Yamaha offers the Direct mode as usual, bypassing a large part of electronics and DSP processors. I must admit that combined with a good external DAC in Direct mode, it managed to drive very demanding loudspeakers without a hitch, providing a sound very similar to a good stereo system. Focusing on music from an external source (omitting the Yamaha DAC), I did not feel a significant lack of power or quality that the A2070 amplifier served.
Sound
Stereo music in Direct mode from a good source, the RME Adi 2 DAC FS, was presented quite ambitiously, not taking away much of what the mono-phonic Musical Fidelity A3CR power amplifier offers. The bass was correct, fast and despite the noticeable withdrawal of the MID of the bass, it delivered a decisive pace with good timing. The vocals had their own noble character, and the high tones did not disturb the dynamic message that Yamaha served.
Changing the source to the Marantz NA 6006 external network player showed many shortcomings. The midrange was significantly exposed. Wind instruments moved too clearly to the front, the keys, either electronic or piano, although they sounded very clear, had an artificial electronic raid. The bass kept his distance and was clearly loose. The treble did not reflect the shiny nuances of the cymbals. The sound of the very good sounding Yamaha combined with the Marantz NA 6006 lost everything that it delighted with combined with the above-mentioned RME converter. With the Marantz source I went back a few dozen years, where in those days I was listening to music on plastic one-piece AIWA, SONY or Panasonic towers. Although the presentation had an entertaining message, it was not able to summon up its flavors and nuances introducing the listener to the atmosphere of higher-class devices.
The Yamaha A2070 will be perfect for home cinema, it has a powerful amplifier that can drive even demanding loudspeakers, and the Cinema DSP surround effects package combined with YAPO 3D functions and Dolby Atmos and DTS-X support provide a fantastic three-dimensional message at the highest level. Built-in functions, where savings can not be found, make it a device geared to the modern recipient who is looking for good sound hidden in one multimedia receiver of our home entertainment center.
