DENAFRIPS - Ares II
Digital to analog converter DAC
Denafrips is a small Asian company from the so-called (Lion City) of Singapore, which was founded in 2012 by Mr. Zhao. The company's headquarters is located in the Chinese city of Guangzhou, where Denafrips' small plant produces products based on its own designs to provide high-quality sound at a reasonable price.
Ares II is an award-winning digital-to-analog converter based on a rather primitive R2R topology that has been refined by Denafrips engineers. It is the R2R, based on the discreet construction of a ladder made digital analog converter, that is to guarantee the success of musicality, which cannot be matched by converters based on Delta-Sigma chips of modern design.
The converter is built of high quality internal components consisting of a large group of branded Japanese Nichicon capacitors placed side by side mounted on a very good quality PCB. Right next to it are precisely placed resistors and a larger toroidal transformer. The metal housing is quite minimalist and well-fitted. On the front panel, right next to the power switch, there are small buttons for sampling frequency and source selection, signaled by tiny red LEDs. The back of the device indicates that we are dealing with a well-thought-out, high-quality product. Next to the power input, equipped with a standard IEC connector, there is a main switch to prevent accidental activation. The rest of the rear space is devoted to (inputs/outputs), which consist of gold-plated very good quality RCA connectors in digital (Coaxial) and analog (RCA) form. Connecting the DAC to a computer is possible via the commonly used USB type B port. Ares II also has two optical inputs and stereo balanced XLR outputs known from professional studio applications.
Ares II is undoubtedly one of the most interesting digital-to-analog converters available on the market. The minimalistic appearance of the armored housing with high-quality components provides sound with support for natively supported DSD up to 1024 and PCM up to 1536. We can choose from two Slow / Sharp digital filters in OverSampling (OS) and Non OverSampling (NOS) functions. at.
Sound
The Asian DAC delivered tonally rich, well-balanced sound right from the start. The Ares II signature is set neutrally so that it easily fits into the wide range of equipment available on the market. The DAC delivers a very dynamic, detailed sound with a wide soundstage and great stereo imaging. The guitars sound tangible, and the bass line along with the drums dynamically and firmly keeps the rhythm. The whole is accompanied by well-lit treble, which perfectly presents the percussion cymbals. The treble is sweet, not too bright and very legible. The only downside of the tested DAC in direct comparison with the RME Adi 2 Dac FS (read the RME review) were the vocals. The human voices presented by Denafrips had a slight withdrawal, which gave them a lesser sense of communing with the artist. Vocals were not helped even by changing the cables to high-quality interconnects and speaker cables that I had at the time of testing. Changing the reference system on which the DAC was tested to a high-end split system from NAIM also did not bring any noticeable improvement in the vocals. I am not saying that it is hidden or poorly presented, but what I know from the RME reference DAC that I use every day slightly differed from the naturalness of the message contained in the music. Denafrips presented better stereo imaging with fantastic three-dimensional positioning of sounds. Ares II easily copes with the presentation of a wide 3D scene, where without special listening to the musical material, we can easily distinguish from which loudspeaker the given sounds come. The breadth and three-dimensionality of the sound is really impressive.
