Musical Fidelity - A3CR
Dual Mono Preamplifier
Founded in 1982, Musical Fidelity is a world-class manufacturer of HI-END equipment.
The originator and main founder of the company was Antony Michaelson, a clarinetist and music lover. Musical Fidelity, thanks to the use of good quality components that create high-quality audio systems, quickly gained recognition among the most die-hard audio enthusiasts.
Michaelson's main goal was to create sets for playing music as the name of the company indicates Music Fidelity. The company's offer includes many well-known and valued products that set the high level offered by Musical Fidelity.
The full-blooded preamplifier from the Musical Fidelity stable is a high-quality product that has received high praise from enthusiasts with high-quality audio equipment for many years. The A3CR is built very solidly, no resources were spared on the housing and, above all, on the interior. The heavy, well-fitted housing of the 13 kg preamplifier is impressive. Through the slots located on the top cover of the housing, which are used to dissipate heat, you can see 4 large (for a preamplifier) transformers located on both sides of the device. It is a dual mono design with a separate power supply for each channel. The front aluminum panel, together with the large volume potentiometer placed in the middle in a metal ring with exposed screws, emphasizes the armored construction of the device. Metal buttons with red LEDs above them are stylistically matched to the massive structure, which makes a positive impression. On the back there are separated RCA outputs for the right and left channels, reassuring us that we are dealing with a true dual mono product. In the middle there are gold-plated good quality RCA inputs for external devices with grounding and a phono preamplifier switch with MM and MC cartridges. The whole thing is accompanied by an IEC input for the power cord (as recommended by the manufacturer 13A). The preamplifier has a remote control function, and the included plastic remote control significantly differs in quality from what the A3CR presents with its powerful appearance.
I must admit that I was waiting very much for the test of this preamplifier, because I have a power amplifier from the same series that I use (read MUSICAL FIDELITY-A3CR Power Amplifier) accompanied by a preamplifier (read Densen-Beat B-200). As the reviewed pre-amp arrived for testing in the company of a twin power amplifier from the same series, it was impossible to resist connecting two identical amplifiers in a mono-block configuration with the above-reviewed preamplifier.
The HI-END speaker cables from Audiomica - Miamen Consequence in the latest version of the M3 were used for the test (read Miamen Consequence M3 review). The sound was provided by the reference analog-to-digital converter RME ADI 2 DAC FS I used, connected to the preamplifier by interconnectThe Chord - Cadenza Reference. Two power amplifiers in a mono-block configuration were connected by The Chord – Chameleon Silver Plus interconnect, and the whole was accompanied by KEF LS50 loudspeakers (read KEF review) accompanied by two REL subwoofers (T5i and R-305) connected monophonically with Neutrik Speakon cables.
Sound
From the very beginning of the music launch, one could hear the correctness and purity of the sounds that were served by the Musical Fidelity preamplifier. Confronting it directly with the Densen B-200 (read Densen B-200) or the previously reviewed rather transparent NAIM system (cask for a Naim review) it could be felt that the A3CR plays with a larger midrange. The bass was fast, correct, and although slightly withdrawn, it did not expose its muscles, but focused more on the sculpted silhouette, with a smaller but more colorful attack. It is true that the lowest frequencies surprised me the most, because the presence of two monophonically connected REL subwoofers and the well-known Miamen M3 speaker cable from Audiomica Laboratory, which refines the contours of low frequencies, remained slightly in the shade. They presented less spectacular dynamics that I know from the firm sound of Audiomica speaker cables. The acoustic guitars from the Eric Clapton concert were very clear and reproduced many outlines of the plucking of the strings as well as sounds of the surrounding background. The distinctly sounding drum snare added a military order to the music where everything seemed to be well kept in check. Although, as I mentioned earlier, Musical Fidelity plays with a larger midrange, the vocalist's voice lost some power, tangibility and breath by depleting the lowest bass frequencies. Stereophony was wide with clearly noticeable differences between the sounds of the left and right speakers. The top end of the cymbals resonated well with long-lasting swaying overtones upon impact. The detail of the A3CR is at a high level, and although the source plays a big role in this case, the preamplifier can suppress or colorize some details. With the A3CR, the sounds are arranged evenly, and the preamplifier itself requires careful selection of accompanying components and cabling with which it will be able to develop its rich possibilities.
